Butler, Dorothy D., An Assessment of the Effects of Instruction and Practice on the Test-Wiseness of Fourth Graders as Measured by Changes in Standardized Test Scores, PhD., Department of Educational Administration, December, 1981

This study compared the mean scores of an experimental group (N=22) and a control group (N=20) of fourth grade subjects on nine subtests of the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. The purpose was to investigate the effects of six hours of instruction and practice on test-taking skills on students' test performance as measured by changes in scores between the fall of 1979 and fall of 1980 test batteries.

The research design was the experimental method with particular emphasis on the randomized pre-test and post-test techniques. One way analyses of variance were used to compare groups, measures, and their interaction on each of the nine subtests. An alpha level of 0.05 was established in advance of treatment.

Results indicated that subjects receiving instructions in test-taking showed greater gains on each of the nine subtests. Statistically, there were significant differences found between measures on five of the nine subtests, between groups on one of the subtests, and on interaction on two of the subtests.

These findings suggest a relationship between the treatment effects and greater gains in test performance.
