About Learning Options founder Dr. Dorothy Butler

"The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires."
     -- William A. Ward

Dr. Dorothy ButlerEach person is more than a resume -- education, job titles, and honors and recognitions. Dr. Dorothy Butler is a teacher, consultant, presenter; the recipient of many and varied honors. Like everyone else, she is the product of her education, professional and personal experiences; the influence of her family, friends and colleagues; and her own philosophy and beliefs.

Dorothy is one of the great teachers who inspires. She has a love for knowledge and wisdom that is evident in visiting Learning Options and visiting with her. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and her attitude is summarized on a poster in Learning Options:

"If I have seen farther, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants."
    -- Sir Issac Newton

Dr. Butler utilizes what research shows to be the most efficient methods -- all the way from the ancient to the most modern state-of-the-art methods and materials. She exposes students to, among other things, the abacus, Greek and Latin root words, French, Fibonacci numbers and the Dvorak comuputer keyboard.

She strongly believes in the involvement of parents in their children's education, supports teachers and administrators by sharing her knowledge in a variety of areas, and advocates in the areas of civil rights, civil liberties, and human rights. Her personal philosophy could be summed up by saying that she believes that every moment matters and every person counts.

Dr. Butler earned a doctorate degree in educational administration from the University of Wyoming. For her dissertation she did research on ethical and efficient test-taking in the public schools in Brookings, SD; this is the only research that has been done on the subject in the upper Midwest. She has a Master's degree in educational administration/guidance and counseling and a B. A. in history and French, both from South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota.

Her professional experience -- teaching, consulting, presenting, writing, developing educational materials, and the establishment of Learning Options -- is broad and varied. Some of the highlights include:

  • Teaching in small rural schools in South Dakota to Los Angeles, CA, with various points in between
  • She has worked in the area of in-service programs in reading, mathematics, individualized education, team teaching, interpersonal communications in 49 of the 50 states, and Canada and the Netherlands
  • Special consultant for Educational Consulting Associates
  • Consultant for Learning Magazine
  • Served a three-year term as the North Central regional representative for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM)

For several years, Dorothy served as a consultant in curriculum and instruction with the South Dakota Department of Public Instruction. She has done more than 500 keynote speeches in the United States, Canada and the Netherlands, plus special presentations to the students and faculty of the American School in Paris and the Hague, Netherlands.

She is an accomplished writer of educational materials and aids for children and teachers, including Versa-Tiles™ Test-Taking Skills Lab. She has also published several booklets on language and mathematics instruction and served as co-author for a computer software program for early-childhood education.

Many organizations have recognized Dr. Butler for her contributions and achievements. Typical of her honors include her being named the winner of the AMOCO Award for Excellence in Teaching during her doctoral studies at the University of Wyoming, recipient of the Lanie Wiener Memorial Award presented by the Board of Education, Glen Cove, New York, and a joint recipient of the first annual Eugene and Dorothy Butler Human Rights Award presented by the City of Brookings, South Dakota.

Dorothy is a member of many professional, communication organizations. Some of these include membership in the Tri-State Advisory Board of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a member of the board of directors of the Minn-la-kota Girl Scout Council, a member of the state advisory committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, and Past Commissioner of the South Dakota Human Rights Commission. Dorothy also served three terms on the Board of Trustees of the Brookings Public Library.

In the 1980's Dr. Butler established Learning Options, where she continues to share her love of learning with children, parents, and teachers. She enjoys working with children, and her learning activities are grounded in researched principles of math, science and spoken and written language.

Dr. Butler invites people to contact her regarding the services offered by Learning Options, workshops, consulting or any questions about ethical and efficient test-taking and test-making, educational materials and activities, Civil rights, Civil liberties, or Human rights.
